Eureka After Dark: Vampires, Monsters, and the Lights Over the Hollow F.K. Sterling

When night falls on Eureka Springs, the Victorian Magic City stops performing for the trolley and starts telling the truth. Gas lamps gutter on Spring Street.

Fog lifts out of the limestone like breath. In the hollows beyond the Basin Park Hotel and the dark mass of the Crescent, things that should have stayed buried keep ordinary hours.

*Eureka After Dark* is a cycle of interconnected Southern Gothic tales set in one of America’s most haunted mountain towns. A widow opens her door to a charming stranger who casts no reflection in her hallway glass. A scream comes down from a hotel room that has not been rented in years. An old mountain woman follows the floating lights into the timber and comes home speaking in a voice that is not the one she took with her. Between those doors walk vampires with patient hunger, older monsters the gift shops will not name, and the pale orbs Ozark families have called by quieter words than “UFO.”

Sterling writes as a resident, not a tourist with a voice recorder. The springs, the steep brick, the Civil War dead, granny-woman warning and neo-pagan rumor are treated as one weather system. The horror is supernatural. It is also neighborly: grief, hunger, a bargain made too far from town, a light that wants company.

This is not a haunted-house brochure. It is a warning dressed as stories. Walk Spring Street at dusk if you like the architecture. Read this before you follow anything off the pavement. Some towns never truly sleep. Eureka Springs only waits until the last shop sign goes dark.

For readers of Ozark folklore, vampire fiction that still has dirt on it, and anyone who has stood under the Crescent at night and felt the hill answer back.
